Grey aliens are widely recognized as an archetypal image of extraterrestrial life. They are often referred to by several names, such as Zeta Reticulans or Roswell Greys. These purported beings are frequently central to claims of close encounters and alien abductions. In modern popular culture, the Grey has become an iconic trope of the space exploration age. They represent a specific way that humans imagine intelligent, non-human creatures from other worlds.

The physical appearance of a Grey is very specific and consistent in many reports. They are typically described as diminutive, humanoid beings with smooth, grey skin. Their bodies are often depicted as elongated with small chests and little muscular definition. These beings are said to lack many external human features, such as noses, ears, or hair. Instead, they possess small orifices for their nostrils, mouths, and ears. Their most striking feature is their disproportionately large, hairless heads. Most descriptions emphasize their large, opaque, black, almond-shaped eyes that lack any visible whites.

There is a notable connection between these beings and the Zeta Reticuli star system. This association began in 1969 through the work of a schoolteacher named Marjorie Fish. She interpreted a map that Betty Hill had drawn while under hypnosis. Hill claimed the map showed the home system of the beings she encountered. Fish determined that the stars marked on the map corresponded to Zeta Reticuli, which is a binary star system. This link helped establish the name Zeta Reticulan for these entities.

While the modern image became famous in the 1960s, similar descriptions appeared much earlier. In 1893, H.G. Wells described future humans with large heads and no mouths or noses. In 1917, the occultist Aleister Crowley claimed to contact a preternatural entity named Lam. Crowley used a process called the Amalantrah Workings to reach this being. His drawings of Lam share many similarities with modern Grey depictions. Later, in 1933, novelist Gustav Sandgren wrote about short aliens with big bald heads and dark eyes. His book, *Den okända faran*, provided a template for the popular image we see today.

The most significant turning point for the Grey archetype was the 1961 abduction claim by Barney and Betty Hill. Their story became widely known through newspaper reports in 1965. This event helped the Grey become an integral part of extraterrestrial folklore. In the United States, approximately 73% of all reported alien encounters involve Grey aliens. This is a much higher proportion than in other parts of the world. In Australia, they account for about 50% of reports, while they make up 48% in continental Europe. In the United Kingdom, the figure is lower, at around 12%.

Various researchers have offered different explanations for why the Grey image is so common. Neurologist Steven Novella suggests that Greys might be a byproduct of human imagination. He proposes they represent traits that humans psychologically associate with high intelligence. Another idea, called the "Mother Hypothesis," was presented by Frederick V. Malmstrom in 2005. He suggested that Greys might actually be residual memories from early childhood development. He attempted to reconstruct a Grey face by transforming a mother's face based on how infants perceive the world.

Beyond individual claims, Greys are deeply connected to various conspiracy theories. Some theorists believe the Greys are part of government disinformation campaigns. Others suggest they are products of government mind-control experiments. In 1995, filmmaker Ray Santilli claimed to have film showing an autopsy of a Grey from the 1947 Roswell incident. He later admitted in 2006 that the footage was a reconstruction. Despite these debates, the Grey remains a central figure in how society discusses the possibility of life beyond Earth.
