It helps us track the days. It tracks how the Earth moves around the sun.

Long ago, the old calendar was a little bit off. It did not match the seasons well. This made it hard to pick the right day for Easter.

A leader named Pope Gregory XIII fixed it. He made a new calendar in 1582. To fix the dates, ten days were skipped.

The new calendar has 12 months. It has 365 days most years. Every four years, it adds one extra day in February.

This extra day is called a leap day. It keeps our calendar in line with the sun. Now we know when the seasons will change.
