It is the only ore for cadmium. An ore is a rock that holds metal. This mineral is important to science. It helps us understand how metals form.

This mineral forms in a special way. It can grow as thick crusts. It also forms into six-sided crystals. These crystals look like small pyramids.

The colors can change quite a bit. You might see honey yellow. You might also see red or brown. It has a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5. This means it is not very hard. Its specific gravity is 4.8 to 4.9.

People first found this mineral in 1840. This happened in Bishopton, Scotland. Workers were digging a tunnel there. They were building the Glasgow, Paisley and Greenock Railway.

The mineral was named after a man. His name was Lord Greenock. He was the landowner of that area. He lived from 1783 to 1859.

Greenockite belongs to the wurtzite group. It is isostructural with wurtzite at high temperatures. This means they share a similar structure. It is also isostructural with sphalerite at low temperatures.

It often sits near other minerals. You can find it with galena. You can also find it with sphalerite. It is found in lead-zinc districts in the central United States.

We use cadmium for many modern jobs. Most cadmium comes from mining other metals. We find it while mining copper, zinc, and lead.

It helps make nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries. It is used in electroplating and high temp alloys. It is even used in control rods for nuclear reactors. Long ago, people used it as a yellow pigment. They used it before they knew cadmium was toxic.
