While the name "grasshopper" is often used for the whole suborder, modern scientists use it to describe more evolved families. Today, Caelifera includes about 2,400 valid genera and approximately 11,000 known species. Many more species likely exist in tropical wet forests.

The physical structure of a grasshopper follows a standard insect body plan. It consists of a head, a thorax, and an abdomen. The head is held vertically at an angle to the body. It features a large pair of compound eyes for all-around vision. These eyes detect movement, shape, color, and distance. Three simple eyes, called ocelli, sit on the forehead to detect light intensity.

The mouthparts are modified for chewing and include two sensory palps. The thorax is the central engine room of the insect. It contains the muscles that control the wings and legs. The three fused thoracic segments bear three pairs of legs and two pairs of wings.

Grasshoppers possess specialized organs for movement and sound. Their forewings, or tegmina, are narrow and leathery for protection. Sensory perception in grasshoppers is highly sophisticated. They hear through tympanal organs located on the first segment of the abdomen. These organs consist of membranes that vibrate in response to sound waves. This allows them to hear the songs of other grasshoppers. The body is also covered in fine hairs called setae. These act as mechanoreceptors to sense touch and wind. Specialized receptors called campaniform sensillae are embedded in the legs to sense pressure.

Grasshoppers undergo hemimetabolous development, which is an incomplete metamorphosis. They do not transform as drastically as butterflies do. Dietary habits vary, but most grasshoppers are polyphagous, meaning they eat many types of plants. They generally prefer grasses and various cereal crops. Some species are even omnivorous and will consume animal tissue or other insects. Their digestive system uses Malpighian tubules to manage waste. In the gut, carbohydrates are digested in the crop, while proteins are processed in the ceca. Some species possess cellulase, an enzyme that softens plant cell walls.

Some species exhibit dramatic changes in behavior and appearance. Under high population densities and specific environmental conditions, they can form massive swarms.
