It is the largest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. The museum focuses on the culture, society, and history of Ancient Egypt. Its collection includes more than 100,000 artifacts. These items represent many different eras, from the Predynastic Period to Roman Egypt.

Visitors enter through a massive space called the Atrium, or the Grand Hall. This entrance covers 10,000 square meters and features a glass roof. This design allows visitors to see the Giza Pyramids from inside the building. The Atrium holds the statue of Pharaoh Ramesses II, which stands 11 meters tall.

From the entrance, people can ascend the Grand Staircase. This structure is six stories tall and acts as a transitional gallery. It connects the main lobby to the upper terrace and the twelve main exhibition halls. The staircase displays more than 60 artifacts arranged in four thematic sections. These sections include the Royal Image, Divine Houses, Gods and Kings, and a Funerary Section.

The museum's main galleries are organized chronologically to show the passage of time. There are 12 main halls that cover history from approximately 3100 BCE to 400 CE. The first three halls focus on Prehistoric and Early Dynastic Egypt. Halls 04 through 06 cover the Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period. Halls 07 through 09 are dedicated to the New Kingdom. Finally, halls 10 through 12 display the Third Intermediate Period, the Late Period, and the Roman and Greek periods.

These galleries house over 24,000 artifacts moved from various locations across Egypt.

One of the most significant parts of the museum is the King Tutankhamun collection. Two entire halls, covering 7,000 square meters, are dedicated solely to this pharaoh.

This is the first time his full collection of 5,398 pieces has been displayed together. The collection includes his famous golden mask and three overlapping coffins. One coffin is made of 110 kg of solid gold. Other items include his Golden Throne, jewelry, and small statues called ushabti. These small figurines were intended to serve the king in the afterlife. The halls are designed to mirror the layout of his original tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

Another unique feature is the Khufu Ships Museum. This hall contains two solar boats belonging to King Khufu, the builder of the Great Pyramid.

These wooden ships are approximately 4,600 years old and are among the oldest ever found. The museum uses interactive displays to explain how these boats might have been used. For children, the museum offers a dedicated Children's Museum. This 5,000-square-meter space uses augmented reality and hands-on games for ages 6 to 12.

The history of the GEM began in the early 1990s. Farouk Hosni, the Minister of Culture, felt the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square was outdated. The project was officially launched in 1992 under President Hosni Mubarak. Construction actually began in 2005 through a joint venture between Orascom Construction and the BESIX Group. The project cost $1.2 billion to complete. The opening faced many delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges.

It contains 19 specialized laboratories for restoring mummies, wood, stone, and metal. To support international research, the museum includes a large Conference Center. This center features a 1,000-seat auditorium and a 250-seat 3D theater. By combining massive collections with advanced technology, the GEM connects ancient history to modern science.
