The Grand Canyon is a massive, steep-sided canyon in Arizona, United States.

It is famous for its overwhelming size and colorful landscape. The canyon is very long and wide. It also reaches a depth of over one mile. This canyon is part of the Colorado Plateau. It is a very important place for science. The rock layers there show much of Earth's early history.

How did such a huge canyon form? It happened through a long process of cutting and rising. First, the Colorado Plateau was uplifted, which means the land moved upward. This uplift happened about 65 million years ago. As the land rose, the Colorado River flowed faster. This increased speed helped the river cut through the rock.

The river and its tributaries cut deep channels through many layers. This action deepened and widened the canyon over time. Some parts of the canyon might even be 70 million years old.

Scientists have studied this area for over 150 years. They often debate how the canyon was made. Some researchers think the Colorado River arrived 5 to 6 million years ago. Others look at older clues to find the truth. For example, a 2008 study used uranium-lead dating on cave calcite. This study suggested some caves are 17 million years old.

Another study in 2012 suggested parts could be 70 million years old. These different dates show that the canyon formed in many segments.

There are many interesting facts about the canyon's layers. The rocks range from very old to relatively young. The Vishnu Schist at the bottom is two billion years old. The Kaibab Limestone on the rim is 270 million years old.

Some layers were formed in ancient shallow seas or swamps. Other layers, like the Coconino Sandstone, were made from sand dunes. Even volcanic activity left its mark with ash and lava. These volcanic rocks are the youngest layers in the canyon.

Water is also a big part of this landscape. Rain soaks into the ground to fill aquifers. An aquifer is a rock layer that holds and moves water.

Some water stays in an unconfined aquifer near the surface. Other water is trapped in a confined aquifer deeper down. This water can come out of canyon walls as springs. People have lived near these waters for thousands of years. Native Americans have inhabited this area for a very long time.
