Ramsay's professional journey began after a major shift in his life goals. Born in Johnstone, Scotland, on November 8, 1966, he originally pursued football. He played for an under-14 team at age 12. However, a serious knee injury ended his athletic career. At age 19, he enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College. He studied hotel management to begin his culinary education. Ramsay has described this career change as a complete accident. He started as a commis chef, a junior cook, at the Wroxton House Hotel.

To master his craft, Ramsay sought training under world-class chefs. He worked in London and was inspired by Marco Pierre White. After working at Harveys, he moved to study French cuisine. He followed advice to work for Albert Roux at Le Gavroche. There, he met Jean-Claude Breton, who later became his maître d'hôtel. Ramsay then moved to Paris to work with Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon. These chefs were both Michelin-starred masters. He also spent a year working on the private yacht Idlewild. This role allowed him to travel to Sicily and Sardinia to study Italian cuisine.

In 1993, Ramsay returned to London to serve as head chef at La Tante Claire. He later held a position at Aubergine, where he earned a 10% share. Aubergine won two Michelin stars during his tenure. In July 1998, Ramsay made a pivotal career decision. He left his partnership to open his own restaurant. He founded Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea with help from his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson. This move was the most important decision of his professional life.
