Long ago, Gondar was the capital of the Ethiopian Empire. Many kings lived here. They built grand stone castles. One famous area is Fasil Ghebbi. This site is a World Heritage Site. Some people call it the "Camelot of Africa."

Emperor Fasilides chose this place as his royal camp in 1636. He built many things there. He made five churches and a stone bath. The bath sits by the Qaha River.

Today, crowds still gather at the bath for celebrations.

In the past, the city had many different groups of people. Muslims and Jews lived in their own parts of town. The city was a busy place for trade. Caravans brought goods from the Red Sea. Even though the city saw hard times, it remains a very special place.
