Close's journey into professional acting began on the Broadway stage in 1974. She made her debut in the play Love for Love, directed by Hal Prince. During her early years, she performed in several productions, including the musical Rex and the play The Crucifer of Blood. She also appeared in the Broadway musical Barnum as the female lead, Chairy. These stage roles provided the foundation for her transition into motion pictures. Her first major film role came in 1980 in The World According to Garp. This performance earned her her first Academy Award nomination.

Her career in the 1980s marked a period of rapid rise to international prominence. In 1981, she starred in The Big Chill, a film that was both a critical and financial success. This success helped her become the third actor to receive a Tony, Emmy, and Oscar nomination in a single calendar year. She continued to earn nominations for films like The Natural in 1984. Close often sought diverse roles to avoid being typecast as only motherly figures. This led her to take on more complex and challenging characters. For example, she played the character Alex Forrest in the 1987 psychological thriller Fatal Attraction.

Close's childhood in Greenwich, Connecticut, helped shape her early development. She grew up in a stone cottage on her maternal grandfather's estate. She has noted that playing in the Connecticut countryside helped develop her imagination. However, her upbringing included a period of significant restriction. When she was seven, her family joined the Moral Re-Armament (MRA) movement. This group dictated many aspects of daily life, including clothing and speech. Close has described the experience as living within a cult. She eventually left the group at age 22 to pursue her acting ambitions.

Her formal education prepared her for the rigors of professional performance. She attended The College of William & Mary, where she double majored in theater and anthropology. While in college, an interview with the legendary actress Katharine Hepburn inspired her to pursue acting. She trained as a serious actor under Professor Howard Scammon in the college's theater department. She was also elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. Before her film career took off, she traveled with the nonprofit singing group Up With People. During this time, she organized the Green Glenn Singers to inspire others through music.

In the 21st century, Close has continued to demonstrate her versatility in various media. She has provided voices for animated characters, such as Kala in the film Tarzan. She also portrayed the famous villain Cruella de Vil in the 101 Dalmatians film series. Her recent film work includes acclaimed performances in Albert Nobbs and The Wife.

Beyond acting, she is the president of Trillium Productions and a co-founder of the website FetchDog. She also uses her platform to advocate for important social causes. These include women's rights, same-sex marriage, and mental health awareness.

Close's life and lineage also contain many interesting connections. Through genealogical research, she discovered she is a distant relative of Princess Diana. She is also distantly related to the actor Clint Eastwood. Her family history also includes a connection to Marjorie Post, who was once married to her grandfather. Despite her affluent background, Close has worked hard to establish herself on her own merit. She has expressed a desire to avoid being seen as a dilettante who did not have to work. Her long career remains a testament to her dedication to the craft of acting.
