The climate is also changing the appearance of the mountain. Eleven significant glaciers cover Glacier Peak. These glaciers have shown different patterns of movement over the years. In the early 1950s, ten of the fifteen glaciers in the North Cascades advanced. This happened because of higher winter precipitation and lower summer temperatures. However, from 1984 to 2005, eight of the glaciers began to retreat. The Milk Lake Glacier melted away completely in the 1990s. Due to global warming, the total glaciated area has shrunk by one third. Scientists estimate the glaciers may be almost gone by the year 2075.
