In 1841, Garibaldi moved to Montevideo, Uruguay. He worked as a schoolmaster and a trader before taking command of the Uruguayan fleet in 1842. He raised an Italian Legion to fight in the Uruguayan Civil War. These soldiers became known as the Redshirts, named after the distinctive color of their shirts. Many of these volunteers came from the large Italian population living in Montevideo. At the time, 4,205 people in a city of 30,000 were Italian. During this era, Garibaldi also joined the Freemasons. He viewed the organization as a global network that united progressive men across different nations.
Garibaldi returned to Italy in 1848 to participate in the struggle for independence. He held several high-ranking military positions, including General of the Roman Republic in 1849. 

Even after unification, Garibaldi continued to be a figure of international importance. He served as the commander of the Army of the Vosges during the Franco-Prussian War. 
Garibaldi's legacy is seen in both history books and modern culture. He was admired by many famous intellectuals, including Charles Dickens, Victor Hugo, and Abraham Lincoln.
