The giant squid is the second-largest mollusc in the world. It is only surpassed in size by the colossal squid, *Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni*. However, the giant squid is less robust and much lighter than the colossal squid. Much of its total length comes from its very long feeding tentacles.

Anatomy plays a vital role in how this creature lives and moves. The body consists of a mantle, which is the main torso, eight arms, and two long feeding tentacles. These tentacles are the longest known of any cephalopod.

The arms and tentacles surround a single, parrot-like beak. To move, the squid uses a process called jet propulsion. It pulls water into the mantle cavity and then pushes it out through a siphon. This can happen in gentle, rhythmic pulses or through quick, powerful contractions. For breathing, the squid uses two large gills located inside the mantle cavity.

It contains an ammonium chloride solution throughout its body. This solution is lighter than seawater, helping the squid drift without constant swimming. This solution has a taste similar to salty liquorice, making the squid unattractive to humans.

Much like counting rings on a tree, the growth rings in the statolith reveal how old the squid is. This method is often used alongside the study of beaks found in the stomachs of predators.

Giant squids are found in all of the world's oceans, though they avoid tropical and polar regions. They live near continental and island slopes, such as those near Newfoundland, Norway, and Japan.

Their vertical range is not fully understood, but they may live as deep as 1,000 meters. They face many predators, including sperm whales, pilot whales, and killer whales. Interactions between these species are often violent. It is common to see circular scars on sperm whale skin left by the squid's serrated suckers. Even giant squids may engage in cannibalism or fight each other for food.

Genetic research has provided a clearer picture of the species' history. While there was once debate about how many types of giant squid exist, DNA analysis shows very little variation globally.

Out of over 20,000 genetic base pairs, only 181 differ between individuals. This suggests that there is only one single species of giant squid in the world. This global unity is likely due to squid larvae being dispersed by ocean currents across vast distances. This interconnectedness helps maintain the species across the diverse habitats of the world's oceans.
