Arab Muslims introduced Islam to the region in the 7th century. By the 9th century, the Saffarids made Islam the official religion.
From 977 to 1163, Ghazni was the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire. This empire covered much of modern Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan. During this time, the city was a center for Persian literature. Sultan Mahmud supported many scholars, philosophers, and poets. The city also holds famous historical monuments. The Ghazni Minarets are two toffee-colored towers. They were built in the early 12th century. They feature intricate geometric patterns and terra-cotta tiles. 

Archaeologists have found many significant relics in the area. The Tapa-e Sardar site is a known Buddhist location. It features a stupa on a hilltop. A large reclining Buddha was excavated there in the 1960s and 1970s. Sadly, the Taliban destroyed this Buddha in 2001. The city has also faced many wars. During the First Anglo-Afghan War in the 19th century, British forces partially demolished the fortifications. 

Despite many conflicts, Ghazni remains an important center. It has seen recent fighting involving the Taliban and other forces. In 2013, ISESCO named Ghazni the Islamic capital of culture. The city continues to grow and serve its people. It has many residential areas and vacant plots. In 2010, the Lincoln Learning Center was established to provide education. This center offers English classes and internet connectivity. Ghazni remains a key link in the geography of Afghanistan.
