They became allies of the Roman Empire. The Romans called them foederati. This meant they were partners who helped defend the empire. The Ghassanids protected the borders from raids. They also guarded important trade paths.

Many Ghassanids were Christians. They were very important to the Christian faith in that area. At their strongest, they ruled over many other Arab tribes. A king named al-Harith ibn Jabalah was a great leader. The Roman emperor Justinian I gave him a very high title.

Sometimes, the Romans and Ghassanids had problems. They did not always agree on religion. This caused some fighting and tension. However, they often worked together to fight the Persian Empire. They used spears and broad swords in battle.

Later, things changed for the Ghassanids. They fought in the Battle of the Yarmuk in 636. They lost that big fight. After that, the Muslim conquests changed the region. Many Ghassanids stayed in Syria. Some joined new groups, but their history remains important.
