He is most famous for his 1569 world map. This map used a new projection to represent sailing courses. These courses are called rhumb lines. On his map, rhumb lines appear as straight lines. This innovation is still used in nautical charts today. Mercator was also a maker of globes and scientific instruments. He had many interests including mathematics, history, and geomagnetism.

This was a small village in the Habsburg Netherlands. His father, Hubert, was a poor shoemaker. Mercator spent his early childhood in Gangelt. His family moved back to Rupelmonde in 1518. This move may have been due to famine and plague. After his father died in 1526, his uncle Gisbert became his guardian. Gisbert hoped Mercator would become a priest. He sent him to a famous school in 's-Hertogenbosch.

At the school in 's-Hertogenbosch, Mercator studied the Bible and classics. He studied under the headmaster Georgius Macropedius.

He learned Latin, logic, and rhetoric. This group of subjects is known as the trivium. He also studied the philosophy of Aristotle and the geography of Ptolemy. During this time, he gave himself a new Latin name. He chose Gerardus Mercator Rupelmundanus. The name Mercator is the Latin translation for "merchant." He later attended the University of Leuven. He lived in the Castle College as a student. He studied philosophy, theology, and Greek. He graduated as a Magister in 1532.

Mercator's career path changed due to his own scientific doubts. He found contradictions between Aristotle's teachings and his own studies. He saw differences between the Bible and geographical observations. These doubts were considered heresy at the university. He moved to Antwerp to focus on philosophy. In Antwerp, he met the friar Franciscus Monachus. Monachus used observation to understand geography.

Mercator also worked with a goldsmith named Gaspar van der Heyden. This apprenticeship taught him how to work with brass. He returned to Leuven to study under Gemma Frisius.

Mercator and his colleagues produced highly successful scientific products. In 1536, they finished a terrestrial globe.

They also made a celestial globe the following year. These globes were considered the finest in the world for sixty years. They were sold all over Europe. This was a large business involving manufacturing and distribution. Mercator also made scientific instruments like astrolabes. These tools helped people study the geometry of astronomy. The income from these sales allowed him to marry and support a family. He had six children with his wife, Barbara Schellekens.

Mercator's work changed how we name collections of maps. In his later life, he made over 100 regional maps. These maps were small enough to be bound into a book. In 1595, he published his Atlas. This was the first time the word "Atlas" described a book of maps. He chose this name to honor the Titan Atlas. He believed the Titan was the first great geographer. The 1595 Atlas contained about 120 pages of maps. It also included a long account of the creation of the universe.

He even wrote a 400-page table of chronology. This table tracked political events, eclipses, and volcanic eruptions.

Mercator was a scholar who relied on information rather than travel. He traveled very little during his life. Instead, he used a library of over 1,000 books and maps. He also maintained a vast correspondence in six different languages. He wrote to travelers, merchants, and seamen to gather facts. This helped him build a very accurate view of the world. He faced religious persecution during his life. He was accused of heresy by Catholic authorities. He spent six months in prison before being released. This led him to move to Duisburg in the Holy Roman Empire.
