Malenkov was a central figure in the complex political system of the USSR. He held many important roles that shaped the country's direction. His career spanned from the Russian Civil War to the late 1950s. He was known for his focus on technical experts and industrial production.\n\nMalenkov's rise began with his early work in the Communist Party. In 1925, he joined the staff of the Orgburo, or Organizational Bureau. This office managed the records of party members. During his ten years in this role, he oversaw two million files. This position gave him direct access to Joseph Stalin. In the 1930s, Malenkov played a role in the Great Purge. This was a period when the state removed people considered enemies. He traveled to regions like Armenia and Tatarstan to help carry out these actions.

\n\nDuring World War II, Malenkov's responsibilities grew significantly. He was appointed to the State Defense Committee in 1941. This committee was a small group that held total control over the nation. It managed all political and economic life during the war. Malenkov was one of the five most powerful men in the country. He was specifically tasked with overseeing the production of military aircraft. He also worked on the development of nuclear weapons.

\n\nMalenkov was a key leader in the Soviet missile and rocket program. He worked closely with Lavrentiy Beria to build these technologies. He supervised the takeover of the German V2 missile industry. This effort helped the Soviet Union later develop Vostok missiles and launch Sputnik. Malenkov focused on recruiting talented engineers and scientists. He believed that technical skill was more important than political ideology. He preferred to hire people who could manufacture munitions quickly and efficiently. This approach helped prioritize economic growth and industrial strength.\n\nIn the postwar years, Malenkov faced intense political competition. One major rival was Andrei Zhdanov. Zhdanov promoted a policy called Zhdanovshchina. This policy emphasized strict communist ideology over scientific progress. Malenkov led a different faction of technocrats. These leaders argued that science and engineering were the highest priorities. They believed that rebuilding the nation required technical expertise. This group included various provincial party bosses and ministry heads.

\n\nMalenkov also used his influence to challenge military leaders. He was suspicious of Georgy Zhukov, a famous war hero. Malenkov accused Zhukov of having \"Bonapartism,\" which meant behaving like a political leader through military fame. Because of these accusations, Zhukov was demoted to a lower position in Odessa. This move helped Malenkov gain more strength with Stalin. By 1948, Malenkov became the Second Secretary of the Communist Party. This made him one of the most influential figures in the Soviet hierarchy.\n\nAfter Stalin died on March 5, 1953, Malenkov became the top leader. He served as the Chairman of the Council of Ministers. However, his time at the top was short because of a power struggle. He competed against Nikita Khrushchev for control of the party. In March 1953, the Presidium forced Malenkov to give up his seat in the Secretariat. This allowed Khrushchev to become the acting First Secretary.
