This group wanted to help the peasants in the countryside. Plekhanov believed in building a large movement among all the people. He did not want to use violence or quick attacks to change things. Instead, he thought leaders should use reason and study how the world works. He eventually left Russia to live in Europe for thirty-seven years. During this time, he studied the ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels very closely.

In 1883, Plekhanov helped start a new group in Geneva.

This group was called the Emancipation of Labour. It was the very first Marxist political group in Russia. Along with others like Vera Zasulich, he translated important books into Russian. They wanted to give Russian revolutionaries a strong foundation of ideas. This work was not easy because other groups did not always agree with them. However, his group helped spread these new ideas across the country.

As time went on, Plekhanov became a leader in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party.

He worked with Lenin to start a newspaper called Iskra in 1900. At first, he was on the same side as the Bolsheviks. But soon, he joined a different group called the Mensheviks. He disagreed with how the Bolsheviks wanted to organize their work. He also believed that Russia needed to change in a specific way before it could become socialist. During World War I, he even supported his country's side in the fight.

After the revolution in 1917, Plekhanov returned to Russia.

Sadly, he died of an illness called tuberculosis in Finland in 1918. Even though he was an opponent, the Soviet Union still honored him. They saw him as a founding father of their movement. He was a philosopher, a theorist, and a revolutionary leader. Many historians call him the "father of Russian Marxism." This title reflects his role in introducing Marxist ideas to Russia. His theoretical writings influenced an entire generation of revolutionaries. This group included Vladimir Lenin, who would later lead the Bolsheviks. Plekhanov spent much of his life developing complex ideas about how society changes. He sought to provide a scientific basis for the struggle of the working class.

His early life was shaped by his family and his education.

He was born in the Russian village of Gudalovka. His father, Valentin, was a member of the landed gentry. Valentin was a military man who had served in the Crimean War. He was described as a severe and sometimes violent man. In contrast, Plekhanov's mother, Maria Feodorovna, was gentle and compassionate. She encouraged his intellectual interests and taught him to read early. She helped instill in him a sense of justice and altruism.

Plekhanov's path to revolution began during his student years.

He attended the Voronezh Military Academy as a young boy. There, a teacher named N. F. Bunakov introduced him to radical literature. Plekhanov began to feel deep sympathy for the suffering of the Russian people. He eventually left military training to study at the Mining Institute. While in Saint Petersburg, he joined a populist movement called Zemlia i Volia, or Land and Liberty. This group believed that the peasant communes could lead Russia toward socialism. Plekhanov worked hard among workers and students to spread these ideas.

Internal conflicts eventually split the revolutionary movement.

Within Zemlia i Volia, a debate grew over the use of political terrorism. Some members wanted to use assassinations to force change. Plekhanov led a faction called the Derevenshchiki, or villagers. He argued that terrorism was a distraction from building a mass movement. He believed revolutionary action must be based on a rational system. In 1879, the organization split into two separate groups. Plekhanov's group was called Chernyi Peredel, or Black Repartition. However, this group struggled to gain much influence among other radicals.

In 1880, Plekhanov began a long period of exile in Europe.

During this time, he underwent a major political shift. He studied the works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels very closely. He moved away from populism and toward Marxism. He became convinced that Russia had to pass through capitalism first. In 1883, he helped found the Emancipation of Labour group in Geneva. This was the first Russian Marxist political organization. The group translated Marxist works into Russian to educate revolutionaries. This work provided the theoretical foundation for future socialist parties.

Plekhanov remained a prominent leader in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party.

In 1900, he worked with Lenin to launch the newspaper Iskra. At the party's Second Congress in 1903, he initially supported the Bolshevik faction. However, he soon broke away to join the Menshevik faction. He criticized the Bolsheviks for being too centralist in their organization. During the 1905 Russian Revolution, he argued that Russia was not yet ready for a proletarian seizure of power. He believed a bourgeois-democratic revolution had to happen first. His views often put him at odds with more radical revolutionaries.

His later years were marked by intense political opposition.

During World War I, he supported the Allied cause through a stance called "defensism." After the February Revolution of 1917, he returned to Russia. He supported the Provisional Government but fiercely opposed the Bolsheviks. He warned that Lenin's seizure of power in the October Revolution would be a disaster. Plekhanov died of tuberculosis in Finland in May 1918. Despite his opposition, the Soviet Union later honored him as a founding father of Russian Marxism. His legacy remains a subject of study for those analyzing the roots of Russian politics.
