In his 1813 work, *Essay on the Theory of the Earth*, he proposed that species were wiped out by periodic catastrophic flooding. He believed these sudden, massive events caused the cycles of creation and destruction of life forms. This was different from the theories of evolution proposed by contemporaries like Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck. In a famous 1830 debate with Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Cuvier argued that animal structure was determined by function. He rejected the idea that species changed through gradual morphological shifts.

During this period, he also examined Sarah Baartman, a woman held in a state of neglect. Cuvier performed a dissection of her body after her death and used disparaging comparisons. These actions provided part of the foundation for scientific racism, a harmful field of study.

Cuvier's influence reached far beyond his own lifetime. His students, such as Louis Agassiz and Richard Owen, became famous scientists in their own right. Even today, his name is inscribed on the Eiffel Tower as one of 72 important figures. He died in Paris in 1832 during a cholera epidemic.
