Georges Cuvier was a famous scientist from France. 

Cuvier looked at old bones found in the ground. He compared these fossils to living animals. This helped him understand how different animals were built. He used this work to prove extinction was real. Extinction means a species is gone forever. Before him, many people did not believe this was true.
He found many special things in the earth. He identified bones of a mastodon. He also found bones of a giant sloth. This sloth was named Megatherium.

He also examined a large skeleton from Argentina and identified it as a giant ground sloth named Megatherium. 

Cuvier's theories on how life changes were tied to his views on geology. He was the most influential proponent of catastrophism in the early 1800s. In his 1813 work, *Essay on the Theory of the Earth*, he proposed that species were wiped out by periodic catastrophic flooding. He believed these sudden, massive events caused the cycles of creation and destruction of life forms. This was different from the theories of evolution proposed by contemporaries like Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck. In a famous 1830 debate with Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Cuvier argued that animal structure was determined by function. He rejected the idea that species changed through gradual morphological shifts.


Cuvier's career in Paris was marked by rapid professional success. He arrived in the capital in 1795 at the age of 26. He eventually became the professor of animal anatomy at the Jardin des Plantes. He also served as a member of the Academy of Sciences and held high political offices. He was a peer of France and even served as Minister of the Interior. In 1819, he was created a baron in honor of his scientific contributions. Despite his high status, he remained dedicated to his research on mollusks and fishes.
While much of his work was groundbreaking, Cuvier's legacy also includes controversial scientific racism. He conducted studies on the supposed physical and mental differences between racial groups. During this period, he also examined Sarah Baartman, a woman held in a state of neglect. Cuvier performed a dissection of her body after her death and used disparaging comparisons. These actions provided part of the foundation for scientific racism, a harmful field of study.
Cuvier's influence reached far beyond his own lifetime. His students, such as Louis Agassiz and Richard Owen, became famous scientists in their own right. Even today, his name is inscribed on the Eiffel Tower as one of 72 important figures. He died in Paris in 1832 during a cholera epidemic.
