He also served as the King of Hanover. His life was defined by a deep love for art and luxury. This interest helped shape the fashions of the Regency era. He was often called \"the first gentleman of England\" because of his charm. However, his personal choices often caused public scandal. These scandals sometimes lowered the prestige of the British monarchy.

He was the first child of King George III and Queen Charlotte. At birth, he held several titles, including Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales. He was a very talented student during his youth. He learned to speak English, French, German, and Italian fluently. By the age of 18, he lived in his own establishment. This independence allowed him to pursue a very expensive lifestyle.

\n\nHis spending habits were extremely high and often caused debt. When he turned 21 in 1783, Parliament gave him a grant of £60,000. He also received an annual income of £50,000 from his father. These amounts were not enough to cover his many costs. For example, his horse stables alone cost £31,000 every year. He lived at Carlton House, where he practiced a very extravagant way of life. This caused tension with his father, King George III. The King wanted his son to be more frugal and responsible.

\n\nGeorge's romantic life led to significant legal and political trouble. In 1785, he entered into a secret marriage with Maria Fitzherbert. This marriage was not legally valid under the law. The King had not given his consent, which was required by the Royal Marriages Act 1772. Furthermore, Fitzherbert was a Roman Catholic. The Act of Settlement 1701 prevented the spouse of a Catholic from succeeding to the throne. When the press discovered the secret, the Prince faced heavy debt and public scrutiny. Parliament eventually granted him £161,000 to help pay his debts.

Because the King could not perform his duties, people debated a Regency. A Regency is when a person rules because the monarch is unable to. Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger argued that Parliament should choose the regent. He suggested that the Prince's powers should be strictly limited. This included preventing him from selling royal property or granting titles. There was also a legal dispute regarding the Great Seal of the Realm. This seal was needed to make official documents valid. Eventually, the King recovered, and the Regency Bill was not passed.

\n\nIn 1795, George married his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick. This marriage was meant to help solve his financial problems. However, the couple was very unhappy and lived apart after 1796. They had one child, Princess Charlotte, who was born in 1796. Sadly, Princess Charlotte died in 1817 before her father. This meant George had no direct heir to his throne. George's reign was also marked by his influence from various favorites. His ministers often viewed his behavior as selfish and irresponsible.
