George Joseph Herriman III was a highly influential American cartoonist.

He is most famous for creating the comic strip Krazy Kat. This strip ran from 1913 until 1944. While it was not always a massive popular success, it earned deep respect from the art world. Critics often treated his work with the same seriousness as high art. In fact, the Comics Journal ranked Krazy Kat as the greatest comic of the 20th century. His unique style changed how people viewed the medium of sequential art.

Herriman’s comic strips utilized several distinct artistic mechanisms. He was known for his bold and experimental page layouts. His backgrounds were often fantastic and appeared to shift constantly. He also used dialogue that was heavy with unique, poetic dialects.

The core dynamic of Krazy Kat involved a strange love triangle. A character named Ignatz Mouse would pelt Krazy Kat with bricks. Krazy, who was an androgynous and naïve character, interpreted these bricks as symbols of love. Meanwhile, Offisa Pupp attempted to prevent these attacks or jail Ignatz. These recurring motifs created a dreamlike and rhythmic storytelling experience.

Throughout his career, Herriman produced many different types of work. He began with humor and editorial cartoons in magazines like Judge. He later moved into syndicated comic strips, which are series published in many newspapers. Some of his early successes included Major Ozone's Fresh Air Crusade and the strip Musical Mose. He also created the bird-populated fantasy strip Gooseberry Sprigg. This earlier work served as a precursor to the characters and themes found in Krazy Kat. He even illustrated books of poetry for author Don Marquis.

Herriman’s life began in New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 22, 1880.

He was born into a mixed-race Creole family. His ancestors were French-speaking Louisianians who were free people of color. When he was ten years old, his family moved to Los Angeles. After graduating high school in 1897, he began working in the newspaper industry. He started as an assistant in an engraving department earning two dollars per week.

He eventually traveled to New York City to find better opportunities for his art.

The geography of the American Southwest played a massive role in his work. Herriman made frequent trips to the Navajo deserts. He was deeply drawn to the landscapes of Monument Valley and the Enchanted Mesa. Because of this, he chose Coconino County as the setting for his Krazy Kat stories.

His artwork frequently incorporated Navajo and Mexican themes and motifs. These desert backgrounds provided a shifting, magical stage for his characters to inhabit.

Despite the complexity of his art, Herriman maintained a stable career. Newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst became a major proponent of his work. Hearst provided Herriman with a lifetime contract through King Features Syndicate. This agreement guaranteed Herriman a comfortable living. It also provided a reliable outlet for his creativity even when his strips lacked mainstream popularity. This support allowed him to continue his experimental work for many decades.

Herriman’s legacy is visible in the work of many modern masters.

Famous cartoonists such as Charles M. Schulz and Bill Watterson were influenced by his style. Other notable artists include Will Eisner, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware. By blending poetry, landscape, and experimental design, Herriman proved that comics could be a profound form of expression. He remains a central figure in the history of American illustration.
