He is best remembered for his massive work, *History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent*. This series provided a deep look at the new nation. Bancroft also played a major role in education and diplomacy. He helped establish the United States Naval Academy. He also served as a high-level diplomat in Europe. His life combined a deep love for history with active service to his country.

Bancroft was born on October 3, 1800, in Worcester, Massachusetts. His father, Aaron Bancroft, was a distinguished Revolutionary War soldier and a clergyman.

George began his education at Phillips Exeter Academy. At that time, high schools did not exist. Students often moved directly from grammar school to college. After attending Harvard, Bancroft traveled to Germany to expand his knowledge. He studied at the universities of Göttingen and Berlin. He mastered many subjects, including Plato, history, and natural science. In 1820, he earned his doctorate from the University of Göttingen. During a European tour, he met many famous thinkers. These included the poet Lord Byron and the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.

After returning to the United States in 1822, Bancroft focused on literature and teaching. He worked as a Greek tutor at Harvard. However, he found the curriculum there too narrow. In 1823, he co-founded the Round Hill School in Northampton, Massachusetts. This school allowed him to contribute to many academic journals. Bancroft also engaged in state politics. In 1830, he was elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. Although he was supported by the Working Men's Party, he declined to take his seat. He later became the Collector of Customs for the Port of Boston in 1837.

Bancroft's most significant political achievement occurred during his time as Secretary of the Navy. He served in President James Polk's cabinet starting in 1845.

During this period, he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Congress had previously refused to fund a naval academy. Bancroft studied the law to find a solution. He discovered he could order a location for midshipmen to await instructions. He also found he could direct instructors to teach them on shore. He used existing naval service funds to cover the costs. He even secured an abandoned military post for the school. This clever use of legal authority created a lasting institution for naval leadership.

As a historian, Bancroft followed a specific philosophical approach. He was a Romantic who emphasized nationalist and republican values. He used four main themes to explain American development. These themes were providence, progress, patria, and pan-democracy. Providence meant that destiny depended on God rather than human will. Progress suggested that continuous reform could create a better society. Patria represented the spreading influence of American liberty. Pan-democracy meant the nation-state was the central focus of history.

His work viewed the history of America as the gradual unfolding of religious and political liberty.

Bancroft also used his influence to support important social changes. During the American Civil War, he communicated with President Abraham Lincoln. Although he was initially skeptical of Lincoln, he eventually supported the president's leadership. Bancroft used his correspondence to argue for the abolition of slavery.

He even helped raise money for the Union Army through a sale of manuscripts. In 1864, Lincoln wrote one of the known manuscripts of the Gettysburg Address at Bancroft's request. Later, in 1866, Congress chose Bancroft to deliver a special eulogy for Lincoln.

In his later years, Bancroft returned to international diplomacy. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson appointed him as the U.S. minister to Prussia. This allowed him to return to Germany, where he lived in Berlin for seven years.
