These factors limit how long a landing probe can survive. Because permanent clouds hide the surface in visible light, scientists use orbital radar. 
Venus has very few impact craters compared to the Moon or Mercury. This is partly because the thick atmosphere burns up small meteorites. There are almost no craters smaller than 5 kilometers in diameter. 
Understanding Venus provides deep connections to planetary science. It helps us study how planets evolve without plate tectonics. Recent studies from October 2023 suggest Venus may have had plate tectonics in the distant past. If this is true, Venus might have once had a more habitable environment.
