This work compiled the vast geographical knowledge of the 2nd-century Roman Empire. Claudius Ptolemy wrote the text in Greek in Alexandria around 150 AD. He did not start from nothing. He revised an earlier, lost atlas created by Marinus of Tyre. Ptolemy used new principles and additional Roman and Persian gazetteers to improve the data. This work changed how humans recorded the shape of the world.

To create his work, Ptolemy used a specific mathematical mechanism. He utilized a coordinate system based on latitude and longitude. Latitude measures the distance in degrees of arc from the equator. Longitude measures distance east or west from a starting line. Ptolemy used fractions of a degree to ensure high precision. His Prime Meridian, or 0 longitude, was located at the Fortunate Isles. This area is near the modern Canary Islands. His map spanned 180 degrees of longitude from the Atlantic to China. He understood that Europe only knew about one-quarter of the entire globe.

The *Geography* is organized into eight distinct books. Book I is a theoretical treatise on cartography. It explains the methods for assembling data and arranging it on a map. Books II through VII function as a massive gazetteer. This section contains between 8,000 and 8,000 toponyms, which are place names. These names describe the *oikoumene*, the known world of the ancient Romans. Book VII is unique because it describes three different map projections. Projections are methods used to represent a curved Earth on a flat surface. Book VIII serves as an atlas containing regional maps.

The history of the text is a story of survival and rediscovery. Most original Greek manuscripts from antiquity are lost. No Greek manuscript exists from earlier than the 13th century. However, fragmentary papyri like the Table of Noteworthy Cities date to the 3rd century.

In the 9th century, al-Khwarismi translated the work into Arabic. This translation deeply influenced the Islamic world's cartographic traditions. Later, the work became essential to Medieval and Renaissance Europe. In 1295, the Byzantine monk Maximus Planudes searched for a copy. He had to redraw maps using only the coordinates provided in the text.

The significance of the work is seen in its many surviving versions. Scholars use a *stemma codicum* to trace how these manuscripts are related. A stemma is a family tree of manuscripts. One manuscript, Codex X, is very important. It is the only copy uninfluenced by the Byzantine revisions of Planudes. It contains local names and coordinates that differ from other copies. This suggests it preserves older, more original data. These variations help historians understand how geographical knowledge changed over centuries.

Different versions of the *Geography* contained different numbers of maps. Early Greek manuscripts after Planudes's work included up to 64 regional maps.

Some beautiful versions, like the Wilton Codex, used gold to illuminate the maps. By the 1420s, scholars added extra maps to the collection. These included new regions like Scandinavia that were not in the original Roman data.

Ptolemy's work connects ancient observations to modern science. His use of latitude and longitude remains the standard for global navigation today.

He improved upon earlier methods, such as those by Eratosthenes from the 3rd century BC. He emphasized using astronomical phenomena over simple travel records. This moved cartography from a descriptive art to a mathematical science. By encoding maps into words and numbers, he ensured that even if a map was lost, the data could be reconstructed. This system allowed the world to be mapped accurately for the first time.
