Gentlemen's agreement

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A gentlemen's agreement is a special kind of deal. It is not a legal contract. People do not sign a paper to make it real. Instead, they use their word. They follow the deal because they are honest. This is often called an oral agreement.

Some businesses use these deals. In the early 1900s, steel companies used them. They did not have a formal group. They just made informal pledges to each other. Car makers also use them. Japanese car makers once agreed on speed limits. This deal ended in 2005.

Sometimes, these deals were used to be unfair. In the past, some people used them to keep others out of neighborhoods. This was a way to keep groups of people separate. These deals were hard to track because they were not written down.

In baseball, a deal kept Black players away from the game. This lasted until 1946. Then, Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. He helped change the game for everyone. This showed that being fair is much better than using secret deals.
