He was shocked by the lack of medical aid. This inspired him to propose new rules for war. He also helped start the Red Cross.

In 1864, many countries met in Geneva, Switzerland. They signed the first Geneva Convention. This treaty helped sick and wounded soldiers on land.

Over time, these rules grew. New versions were made in 1906 and 1929.

After World War II, leaders made four main agreements in 1949. These are the Geneva Conventions we use today. The first helps wounded soldiers on land. The second helps wounded sailors at sea. The third protects prisoners of war. The fourth protects civilians, who are people not fighting in the war.

Many countries have signed these rules. They help keep people safe during conflict. Some groups even use a new symbol called the Red Crystal.

This symbol helps medical workers stay safe too.
