Math helps us see how things fit together.

One big part of this is called general topology. It is the study of the most basic rules for shapes and spaces. It helps us understand how points stay close or move.

General topology uses ideas like continuity. This means if points are nearby, they stay nearby after a change. We also look at connectedness. A connected set is one single piece. It cannot be split into two parts that are far apart.

To make these ideas clear, mathematicians use open sets. An open set is a way to define what is "nearby." If we change the rules for open sets, we change the whole space. This set of rules is called a topology. A set with these rules is a topological space.

Some spaces are easier to study. These are called metric spaces. In these spaces, we can use a metric to measure the exact distance between points. Many common shapes are metric spaces. General topology became its own field around 1940. It is a foundation for many other types of math.
