Gemini is a prominent constellation located in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is one of the 88 modern constellations recognized by astronomers today. This group of stars is also part of the zodiac. Its name is the Latin word for "twins." Historically, Gemini was one of the 48 constellations described by the astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. It is most famously associated with the Greek myth of the twins Castor and Pollux. These figures are collectively known as the Dioscuri. 
To find Gemini, you can look for two very bright stars. These stars are named Castor and Pollux. You can locate them by looking eastward from the V-shaped Hyades cluster in Taurus. Another way is to use the three stars of Orion's Belt as a guide. You can also draw an imaginary line between the Pleiades cluster and the star Regulus in Leo. This line passes through the midpoint of Gemini, just below the two brightest stars. 
Gemini is surrounded by several other constellations. It lies between Taurus to the west and Cancer to the east. To the north, you will find Auriga and Lynx. To the south are Monoceros and Canis Minor, while Orion sits to the southwest. The position of the Sun in these constellations changes over very long periods. This is due to a process called axial precession. In the first century AD, the Sun's position at the northern solstice shifted from Cancer into Gemini. By 1990, the Sun's solstice position moved from Gemini into Taurus. It will stay in Taurus until the 27th century AD, when it moves into Aries. Currently, the Sun moves through Gemini from June 21 to July 20. This pattern will continue through the year 2062.
Ancient cultures had different ways of seeing these stars. In Babylonian astronomy, Castor and Pollux were known as the Great Twins. They were viewed as minor gods named Meshlamtaea and Lugalirra. These names were titles for Nergal, the Babylonian god of the underworld. In Chinese astronomy, the stars in Gemini belong to two different areas. They are part of the White Tiger of the West and the Vermillion Bird of the South. In Greek mythology, the twins were the sons of Leda. Pollux was the son of Zeus, while Castor was the son of the king of Sparta. When Castor died, Pollux asked Zeus to make him immortal. Zeus granted this wish by placing them together in the heavens.
While they look like twins, the stars in Gemini are physically very different. Pollux is the brightest star in the constellation with a magnitude of 1.14. It is an orange-hued giant star located 34 light-years from Earth. It even has an extrasolar planet revolving around it. Castor is the second-brightest star and has a magnitude of 1.6. It is actually a sextuple star system located 52 light-years away. This system includes two spectroscopic binaries with a 470-year period. It also contains a red dwarf star that is an Algol-type eclipsing binary. 
Gemini also contains many deep-sky objects. One is M35, an open cluster discovered by Philippe Loys de Chéseaux in 1745. This cluster contains 200 stars arranged in curved chains. It is 2,800 light-years away and covers an area similar to the full moon. 

Finally, Gemini is the home of important astronomical discoveries and events. In 1781, William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus near the star eta Geminorum. In 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto while looking near delta Geminorum. The constellation is also famous for the Geminid meteor shower. This shower peaks on December 13 and 14. It is one of the richest showers, with a maximum rate of about 100 meteors per hour. There is also a newer shower called the Epsilon Geminids. These meteors travel at a higher velocity than the Orionids.
