He specialized in detective fiction and mystery novels. His work helped shape the landscape of French crime fiction. Many readers compare his literary contributions to those of Edgar Allan Poe in the United States. He is also viewed as a parallel to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the United Kingdom. Leroux's storytelling has had a lasting impact on global popular culture.

Leroux's professional life began in the world of news. He started as a court reporter and theater critic for L'Écho de Paris. In 1893, he became an international correspondent for the newspaper Le Matin. This role required him to travel and report on major global events. He was present to cover the 1905 Russian Revolution. His early life in Paris was marked by grand claims and sudden wealth. He was born in 1868 to Marie Bidaut and Dominique Leroux. Leroux claimed a prestigious lineage. He stated he was a descendant of William II of England. This king was the son of William the Conqueror. After studying law in Caen, he graduated in 1889. He eventually inherited millions of francs. However, he lived a wild lifestyle that nearly led to bankruptcy.

Leroux became a master of specific literary subgenres. One major contribution was the "locked room mystery." His 1908 novel, The Mystery of the Yellow Room, is considered a celebrated example of this style. This book features the amateur detective Joseph Rouletabille. He also wrote a series of adventures involving this character. Other notable works include the Chéri-Bibi series. These stories showcased his ability to engage readers through complex plots.

It also inspired the 1986 musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. His book Balaoo, published in 1911, was also adapted into films in 1913, 1927, and 1942.

Leroux was also an entrepreneur in the growing film industry. In 1919, he and Arthur Bernède formed the Société des Cinéromans. This company published novels and produced films based on them. He also worked with René Navarre to debut films like Tue-la-Mort. His daughter, Madeleine, even played a lead role in his productions. In 1909, his professional success was recognized when he was named a Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur. This is a high honor in France.

Some of his stories reached English readers through specialized magazines. For example, the story "Not' Olympe" appeared in the December 1929 issue of Weird Tales.

It was published under the English title "The Mystery of the Four Husbands." While much of his work is well-documented, some confusion exists regarding his bibliography. Certain anthologies have incorrectly attributed stories like "The Waxwork Museum" to him. These stories actually belong to other authors or different sources. Leroux died in Nice, France, in 1927 at the age of 58.
