geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gambela is a region in western Ethiopia. It sits near the border of South Sudan. To the east is the Oromia Region. To the south is the South West Ethiopia Region. The land is mostly flat. It sits low, near sea level. Some parts in the east go much higher. These areas reach about 2,000 meters.

Two big rivers flow through the land. These are the Openo and Akobo rivers. Many groups of people live here. They include the Anuak, Nuer, Majang, and Opo. The Nuer zone is the largest area. The Anywaa zone is the second largest. The capital city is also named Gambela.

People in this region do many things. They grow coffee. Some people also look for oil in the ground. Many people also live in refugee camps. These camps hold people from South Sudan. In 2018, there were about 402,000 refugees. This was almost as many as the people who live in Gambela. The region is one of the smallest in Ethiopia. It also has a small number of people.
