For example, Viking longships in northern Europe worked much like galleys. In North America, people built small row galleys during the American Revolutionary War. However, galleys were not good for the wide, open ocean. They had a hard time in rough weather and far from land. Eventually, large sailing ships with many guns became more common. This meant the era of the great galley finally came to an end.

In these cases, many rowers might share a single, very large oar. This method was often used with forced labor, such as convicts or galley slaves.

Because of the physical limits of human rowing, it was not practical to have more than three banks of oars. If a ship was described with more than three banks, it usually meant there were additional rowers per oar. For example, a quinquereme was a "five-oar" vessel, but it actually used multiple rowers per oar in a bireme or trireme arrangement. Modern scholars often refer to these ships simply as "fives" or "sixes."

Pharaoh Pepi I used these ships to transport troops and bring back timber and slaves. During the reign of Hatshepsut, Egyptian galleys traded luxuries on the Red Sea. The first Greek galley-like ships appeared in the second half of the 2nd millennium BC. The Iliad, an epic poem from the 12th century BC, describes oared vessels used to move soldiers. The Battle of the Delta in 1175 BC is noted as the first recorded naval battle involving organized armed forces.

Ancient ships often used rams to strike enemy hulls. They also used catapults and, during the Early Middle Ages, a substance called Greek fire. By the 15th century, galleys began using cannons. Early 16th-century gun galleys had heavy guns mounted in the bow. To aim these weapons, the crew had to maneuver the entire vessel. While these gun galleys were initially a threat to sailing ships, they were eventually made obsolete. This happened because full-rigged ships were developed with superior broadside armament, which means they could fire many guns from their sides.

Beyond war, galleys played a vital role in Mediterranean economy and travel. They served as trade vessels for expensive or high-priority goods until the end of the Middle Ages. Their oars guaranteed progress even when sailing ships were becalmed, or stuck without wind. This reliability made them a safe choice for transporting passengers. Christian pilgrims, in particular, used galleys for travel during the High and Late Middle Ages. However, galleys had clear limitations. They were unsuitable for the wide, open ocean and struggled in rough weather. They also required constant resupply from land-based stations.

Although the Mediterranean is their most famous home, the concept of the galley appeared elsewhere.

Scandinavian longships used in the British Isles functioned much like galleys. In North America, the early US Navy and its opponents built "row galleys" during the American Revolutionary War. These were often more similar to gunboats or brigantines. In the Baltic Sea, a final revival of galley warfare occurred during the 18th century. This happened during conflicts involving Russia, Sweden, and Denmark. Ultimately, the rise of large sailing fleets and specialized cruisers like the xebec changed the seas forever.
