Gaia is a space observatory from the European Space Agency.

It was launched in 2013. It worked until March 2025. Gaia was built for astrometry. This is a way to measure where stars are. It also finds their distance and how they move.

Gaia looks at one billion objects. This includes stars, planets, and comets. It even looks at quasars. A quasar is a very bright object far away.

To do this, Gaia spins in a circle. It scans the sky in stripes. It looks at each object about 70 times. This helps make a big 3D map of space.

The craft stays in a special orbit near Earth. It uses a sunshade to stay cool. This shade also helps it get power from the Sun. An atomic clock helps Gaia keep perfect time. This makes its measurements very exact. Scientists still use the data to study our galaxy.
