Instead, he became a leader in student politics during his university years. In 2011, he ran for the presidency of the University of Chile Student Federation, also known as FECh. He won the election with 30.52% of the votes. During this time, he acted as a spokesperson for students during large protests. This role helped him gain national recognition as a young leader.
In 2013, Boric transitioned from student activism to official government roles. He ran as an independent for the Chamber of Deputies, which is a group of elected officials who make laws.
