He was born in 1894 in a town called Pilani. His father started businesses that traded goods like cotton and grain. G. D. Birla took over the family business. He wanted to make things, not just trade them. He moved to Bengal to work with jute. Jute is a plant used to make strong fabrics.

He started jute mills and built many other companies. He made cars, cement, and even steel tubes.

Birla was also a leader in his community. He helped start the United Commercial Bank in 1943. He was a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi. He helped start many schools and colleges. These schools helped people learn new skills. During a hard time called the Bengal famine, his role was a subject of debate. Some say he bought much rice to help his businesses. This made food very expensive for poor people in rural areas. In 1957, the Indian government gave him a high honor. It is called the Padma Vibhushan.
