Today, his books are available in over 170 languages. His literary legacy continues to influence filmmakers and thinkers across the globe.

Dostoevsky's writing process involved exploring deep psychological and social layers. He used his novels to examine how individuals navigate troubled political environments. His narratives often feature intense characters facing moral or spiritual crises. For example, his novella *Notes from Underground*, published in 1864, is recognized as a foundational work of existentialist literature. This style of writing focuses on individual existence and freedom. He also used journalism to reach the public. He published and edited several magazines, including his own collection titled *A Writer's Diary*.

His body of work is extensive and varied in form. It consists of thirteen novels, three novellas, and seventeen short stories. Among his most acclaimed novels are *Crime and Punishment* (1866) and *The Brothers Karamazov* (1880). Other major works include *The Idiot* (1869), *Demons* (1872), and *The Adolescent* (1875). Each of these works contributes to a larger study of human nature. His experiences in difficult environments directly informed his creative output. After his time in a Siberian labor camp, he wrote *The House of the Dead* between 1860 and 1862.

Dostoevsky's life was marked by significant transitions and hardships. Born in Moscow in 1821, he grew up in a home near the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor. His mother died of tuberculosis in 1837. Following this loss, he attended the Nikolayev Military Engineering Institute.

Although he trained as an engineer, he lacked interest in military science. He preferred drawing, architecture, and literature. After graduating, he worked as an engineer and translated books to earn money. He eventually entered literary circles in Saint Petersburg after publishing his first novel, *Poor Folk*, in 1846.

In 1849, Dostoevsky faced a life-altering legal crisis. He was arrested for his involvement with the Petrashevsky Circle. This group discussed banned books that were critical of Tsarist Russia. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted at the last moment.

He was instead sent to a Siberian hard labour camp for four years. This was followed by six years of compulsory military service in exile. These years of confinement and service profoundly shaped his later philosophical perspectives. He emerged from this period as a writer deeply concerned with suffering and redemption.

Later in life, Dostoevsky faced personal and financial struggles. While traveling in Western Europe, he developed a gambling addiction. This addiction led to severe financial hardship and periods of begging for money.

Despite these challenges, he achieved immense professional success. He became one of the most widely read and highly regarded Russian writers. His ability to transform personal struggle into universal literature is a hallmark of his career. He maintained his productivity even while navigating the complexities of fame and poverty.

The influence of Dostoevsky extends into many different intellectual fields. His psychological depth impressed the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche described him in *Twilight of the Idols* as the only psychologist from whom he had something to learn. His work also contributed to the emergence of Freudianism and Existentialism. Many famous Russian writers, such as Anton Chekhov and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, were influenced by his style.
