Math has many different parts.

A tool called a functor links these parts. It moves things from one group to another. In math, a group of things is called a category. A functor is a way to map one category to another.

It does not just move objects. It also moves the paths between them. These paths are called morphisms. A functor must keep the patterns the same. It must keep the identity paths and the way paths join together.

Some functors are called covariant. They move things in the same direction. Others are called contravariant. These functors turn the paths around. This helps math experts see how different ideas work together. Functors are used in many areas of math today. They help link shapes to algebra. They can even link groups to sets. Some functors are called forgetful functors. They take a complex group and turn it into a simple set. This lets us see the basic parts of a math idea.
