Functional analysis

math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Math often looks at numbers or shapes. But it can also look at whole sets of functions. A function is a rule that links inputs to outputs. Functional analysis is a branch of math that studies these sets. These sets are called vector spaces. They can have a very large number of parts. Many of these spaces have infinite dimensions.

Mathematicians use special rules to study these spaces. They use tools like a norm. A norm is a way to measure the size of an object. They also use a topology. This is a way to talk about how points are close to each other. One famous type of space is a Banach space. These are spaces that are complete. This means they have no gaps. Another type is a Hilbert space. These spaces use an inner product to measure things.

This math helps us in many ways. It helps us study quantum mechanics. It also helps with machine learning. Many big ideas come from this field. These ideas are called the four pillars. They include the Hahn-Banach theorem and the open mapping theorem. Other pillars are the closed graph theorem and the Banach-Steinhaus theorem.
