It sits along the shores of Hakata Bay. Because it is the nearest point among Japan's main islands to the Asian mainland, it has long been a gateway to the country. This unique geography made it a center for international commerce since ancient times. Today, Fukuoka is the most populous city on Kyushu island. It is also the sixth largest city in Japan. The city is part of a heavily industrialized area known as the Fukuoka–Kitakyushu zone.

The name Fukuoka comes from two Japanese characters. The character *fuku* means "good fortune" or "blessing." The character *oka* means "hill." This name was introduced in 1600 by a leader named Kuroda Nagamasa. He named his new castle town after the Fukuoka district in Bizen Province. This was the ancestral home of his clan. Before the modern city formed, the area consisted of two distinct parts. Hakata was a merchant district and a busy port. Fukuoka was a place where many samurai lived. These two areas merged to form the modern city on April 1, 1889.

Archaeological evidence shows that humans have occupied this area since the Jomon period. During this time, the Fukuoka Plain was actually underwater. Early settlers lived in pit dwellings on the edges of the land. Later, during the Yayoi period, the rise of rice cultivation changed the region. Large, moated villages like the Itazuke Site appeared. This era also brought new technologies, such as bronze and copper tools. Fukuoka's location near the Sea of Japan made it a natural entry point for trade. It became a hub for cultural influences from Korea and China.

Fukuoka played a critical role in early Japanese history and diplomacy. As early as 57 A.D., interactions with the Han dynasty of China were recorded. During the Asuka Period, the area grew into a vital administrative center. It served as the regional government headquarters for Kyushu. The city was also a major trade center between Japan and Tang China. Some scholars even suggest it was the first place where the Imperial Family set foot in Japan. Historical remains, such as the Kōrokan government guest house, show how important these international connections were.

Religion and culture also shaped the city through the introduction of Buddhism. Several important temples were built by monks who studied abroad. The monk Eisai founded Shōfuku-ji, which is the oldest Zen temple in Japan. He is credited with bringing tea and tea culture to the country. Another monk, Enni, is known for bringing udon noodles from China. The famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival also has deep roots here. It is believed to have started in 1241. The festival began when people carried the monk Enni on a platform to pray against a plague.

In the late 13th century, Fukuoka faced the threat of Mongol invasions. Kublai Khan of the Mongol Empire sent a massive fleet to attack Kyushu. In 1274, a force of 33,000 troops attempted an invasion. Japanese samurai responded by building a stone barrier along the coast of Hakata Bay. This wall was built between 1276 and 1277. A second, much larger invasion arrived in 1281 with 140,000 soldiers. While the invaders reached as far as Dazaifu, a severe typhoon struck the fleet. This storm was called the *Kamikaze*, or "Divine Wind," because it thwarted the invasion.

The modern era brought rapid growth and significant changes to the city. In the 20th century, Fukuoka became a regional military center. During World War II, the city was firebombed on June 19, 1945. This attack destroyed 21.5 percent of the urban area. After the war, the city focused on rebuilding and economic development. The 1975 extension of the Sanyō Shinkansen high-speed railway connected Hakata Station to Tokyo. In 1981, the Fukuoka City Subway began operations. This helped reduce traffic and made transit much faster.
