Fukui has a complex history involving many different eras. Originally, the region consisted of the provinces of Wakasa and Echizen. In 1471, Asakura Toshikage began a major period of fortification. He built hilltop fortifications on the mountains surrounding the Ichijōdani valley. He also constructed walls and gates to secure the northern and southern ends of the valley. This area became a major cultural and military center. By the time of Asakura Takakage, the population of this area peaked at over 10,000 inhabitants.

However, this era ended when Oda Nobunaga invaded the province. In 1573, Nobunaga's forces razed Ichijōdani to the ground during a siege.

The modern city was formally established on April 1, 1889. During the pre-war period, Fukui developed into an important railroad and industrial center. Local factories produced various goods, including textiles and electrical equipment. They also manufactured machine motors and aircraft parts. The city faced extreme destruction during World War II. On June 19, 1945, a bombing campaign targeted the area. A survey found that 84.8% of the city was destroyed during this event.

This population is spread across 107,553 households. The population density is approximately 476 persons per square kilometer. The population has remained relatively steady for the last 40 years.

The economy of Fukui is quite diverse and mixed. It relies on several different sectors to function. The primary sector includes agriculture and commercial fishing. Local organizations like the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives and the Fisheries Cooperative Association support these workers.
