A fresco is a beautiful way to paint on walls.

The word fresco means "fresh" in Italian. This is because artists paint on wet lime plaster. They mix dry color powder with water. Then, they spread the color onto a thin, smooth layer of wet plaster. We call this layer the intonaco.

As the plaster dries, a chemical change happens. The color sinks deep into the wall. This makes the art a part of the wall itself. This makes frescoes last for many years.

Making a fresco is hard work. An artist must work very fast. They only have about seven to nine hours. They must finish before the plaster dries. Each section they finish in one day is called a giornata.

You can often see faint lines where one day ends and another begins. If an artist makes a mistake, they may have to scrape the plaster off. Some artists also use a dry method called a secco. They do this to add small details or bright blue colors. True frescoes are very strong and can last for many generations.
