He spent much of his life at Stanford University. He studied chemistry and electrical engineering. As a young boy, he loved playing with ham radio.

During World War II, Terman worked at Harvard University. He led a large staff of over 850 people. They made tools to help block enemy radar. These tools helped protect people during the war.

After the war, Terman returned to Stanford. He became the dean of the school of engineering. In 1951, he helped start the Stanford Industrial Park. The school let high-tech companies use its land. Big companies like Hewlett-Packard moved there. This area became a center for new ideas. People now call this place Silicon Valley.

Terman also helped his students. He told them to start their own businesses. He even gave them money to help them grow. Many of these companies became very successful. Because of him, Stanford became one of the best schools in the world. A highway in California is named for him.
