Frederick Jackson Turner was a famous American historian. He lived from 1861 to 1932. He taught at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. He had a very big idea called the frontier thesis.

Turner believed the moving frontier shaped the country. He said the West changed the American character. As people moved west, they left old ideas behind. They found new ways to live on the land. This made them brave and helped them build democracy. This idea was very popular for a long time. By 1932, many schools taught his ideas.

Turner also studied sectionalism. This is the study of how different groups live. He thought groups lived in different ways based on their land. This helped historians look at social history. This means they look at how people live and work.

Later, some historians disagreed with him. They said he did not focus enough on women. They also said he did not focus on minorities. They felt the frontier was not fair to everyone. Still, his work changed how we study history today. Many people still talk about his great ideas.
