He served as the Holy Roman emperor from 1155 until 1190. This empire covered large parts of Central Europe. Frederick was born in mid-December 1122 in Hagenau. His family history made him a unique candidate for leadership. His father belonged to the Hohenstaufen dynasty. His mother was from the Welf family. These were the two most powerful families in Germany. Because he descended from both, the prince-electors saw him as an acceptable choice.

Frederick's early life focused on physical skills rather than books. He learned to ride horses and hunt. He also learned how to use various weapons. Interestingly, he could not read or write at first. He also struggled to speak Latin until later in his life. He attended several Hoftage during his youth. A Hoftag was an informal assembly for empire nobles. These meetings took place in cities like Strasbourg, Konstanz, and Worms. These gatherings helped him understand the politics of the German states.

In 1147, Frederick joined the Second Crusade. He followed his uncle, King Conrad III, on this journey. During this time, Frederick became the Duke of Swabia. The crusade was very difficult for the German armies. In the Byzantine Empire, a flash flood destroyed a main camp. Frederick and Welf VI survived because they camped on a hill. Later, the German army reached Acre in April 1148. They participated in the Siege of Damascus. This siege lasted only five days and ended in failure.

Frederick rose to the highest levels of power in 1152. After Conrad III died, the electors chose Frederick as king. He was elected in Frankfurt on 4 March 1152. He was crowned King of the Romans in Aachen on 9 March 1152.

His rise was significant because royal power had been weak for decades. For twenty-five years, the German monarchy had very little real authority. The empire was a patchwork of over 1,600 individual states. Each state had its own prince. Frederick used his personality and political skills to manage these leaders. He sought to restore order to the entire region.

His titles grew as he expanded his influence. He was crowned King of Italy in Pavia in 1155. Later that year, Pope Adrian IV crowned him emperor in Rome.

In 1178, he was also formally crowned King of Burgundy at Arles. He was known by the nickname "Barbarossa" in Italy. This name means "Redbeard." While his hair was actually blond, his beard was described as reddish. This nickname became one of the most powerful historical monikers. It helped distinguish him from his grandson, Frederick II.

Frederick worked to change how the empire functioned. He helped re-establish the Roman rule of law. This system helped balance the power of the Pope. The papacy had dominated the German states for a long time. Frederick was a pragmatist who looked for mutual interests. He did not try to end feudalism. Instead, he tried to restore it to create more stability. His reign is often seen as a time of great organization. Historians view him as one of the empire's greatest medieval emperors.
