Herbert did not just write fiction. He worked as a journalist, a photographer, and a book reviewer. He also served as an ecological consultant and a lecturer. His work often blended complex ideas about nature and human society. This variety of experience helped him build deep and realistic worlds in his writing.

Herbert's career involved many different professional stages. He began in journalism, working for several newspapers. These included the Glendale Star, the Oregon Statesman, and the Seattle Star. He also worked as a speechwriter for a Republican senator.

Later, he became a social and ecological consultant in Vietnam and Pakistan. He even directed and filmed a documentary titled The Tillers. By 1972, he had retired from newspaper work to become a full-time fiction writer. This transition allowed him to focus entirely on his complex literary projects.

Writing the Dune saga required intense research and specific stages of development. The idea for Dune began in 1959 during a research assignment. Herbert was writing a magazine article about sand dunes in Oregon. He became so involved in the research that he gathered more material than an article required. This research eventually grew into a massive novel. It took him six years of dedicated writing and research to complete the book. The story used real-world ecological concepts, such as sand dune management, to build its fictional setting.

The Dune series consists of the original novel and five sequels. These sequels include Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune.

Each book expanded on the themes of the first. Herbert also wrote other notable works like The Godmakers and The Dosadi Experiment. Some of his books were written in partnership with Bill Ransom. These included The Jesus Incident and The Lazarus Effect. His writing often explored deep philosophical and environmental questions.

Herbert's path to success was not easy or immediate. When Dune was first published in parts, nearly twenty book publishers rejected it. One editor even noted that he might be making a major mistake. However, Sterling E. Lanier eventually offered a $7,500 advance to publish it as a hardcover. The book became a major critical success. It won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1965. It also shared the Hugo Award in 1966. By 1968, Herbert had earned $20,000 from the book, which was a significant amount for science fiction at that time.

Herbert's personal life was marked by both significant changes and deep tragedy. He married Beverly Ann Stuart in 1946, and they had two sons, Brian and Bruce.

His wife's health suffered greatly due to cancer treatments. She passed away in 1984. This was a very difficult year for Herbert, as his career reached new heights while he faced personal loss. In 1985, he married Theresa Shackleford. Herbert died in 1986 from a pulmonary embolism while recovering from surgery for pancreatic cancer. He was 65 years old.

The legacy of Frank Herbert continues through many different media adaptations. The Dune story has been brought to the screen several times. David Lynch directed a feature film in 1984. There was also a miniseries produced in 2000 and 2003. More recently, a new film trilogy began with Denis Villeneuve's Dune in 2021 and Dune: Part Two in 2024.
