The war pitted the Second French Empire against the North German Confederation. This confederation was led by the Kingdom of Prussia. The conflict was driven by a struggle for continental dominance. France wanted to maintain its status as the leading European power. However, Prussia had grown much stronger after defeating Austria in 1866. This shift in power created deep tension between the two nations.

The war began due to a diplomatic crisis regarding the Spanish throne. A prince from the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen family was offered the position. France feared this would leave them surrounded by Prussian influence. Although the prince eventually withdrew his acceptance, tensions remained very high.

A French ambassador met with King Wilhelm I at Ems to demand further concessions. The King rejected these demands. Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck then released an altered version of this meeting, known as the Ems Dispatch. The modified wording made the exchange seem insulting to the French. This provoked massive public anger in Paris. Large crowds demanded that France take action.

Bismarck had specific goals for this conflict. Many historians believe he wanted to provoke France into declaring war. He hoped a shared enemy would unite the independent southern German states. These states included Baden, Württemberg, Bavaria, and Hesse-Darmstadt. By fighting alongside Prussia, these states would likely join a unified German nation. France mobilized its army on July 15, 1870. The North German Confederation responded with its own mobilization that same night. France officially declared war on July 19, 1870. The southern German states immediately joined the Prussian side.

The war unfolded in distinct military phases. The German coalition possessed significant advantages in organization and technology. They used railways to move troops with great speed. They also utilized advanced artillery, which are large-caliber guns used in combat. German forces were superior in numbers and professional training.

In the first phase, German armies moved into northeastern France. They won several hard-fought battles in the eastern regions. A major turning point occurred at the Battle of Sedan. During this battle, the French Emperor Napoleon III was captured. This event dealt a decisive blow to the Second French Empire.

Following the defeat at Sedan, the war entered a second phase. A new Government of National Defense was established in Paris.

This new government continued to fight for five more months. German troops engaged new French armies in northern France. Eventually, the German military began a siege of Paris. A siege is a military operation where an army surrounds a city to cut off supplies. The siege lasted for over four months. Paris finally fell on January 28, 1871. This marked the effective end of the war.

The conclusion of the war led to massive political changes. As German victory became certain, the German states proclaimed the creation of the German Empire. King Wilhelm I became the first German Emperor. This unified most German-speaking people under one nation-state for the first time. In May 1871, the Treaty of Frankfurt was signed.

Germany received billions of francs in war indemnity, which is a payment for damages. Germany also annexed the territory of Alsace-Lorraine. This changed the borders of Europe significantly. The new German Empire replaced France as the dominant land power on the continent.

The war had long-lasting effects on French society and politics. The defeat ended imperial rule in France. This led to the establishment of the French Third Republic. The war also caused deep resentment within France. This anger contributed to the Paris Commune, a revolutionary uprising in Paris. The Commune held power for two months before it was suppressed. On the international stage, Bismarck used his influence to shape European affairs for twenty years. His approach was known as Realpolitik, which focuses on practical power and national interest. The war fundamentally shifted the balance of power in Europe for decades to come.
