To understand the Franciscan way of life, one must look at the original Rule of Saint Francis.
The Franciscan family is divided into three distinct types of orders. The First Order consists of men and is divided into three main branches. The Order of Friars Minor (OFM) is the largest contemporary male order. The Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv.) was formed as early as 1209. The Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap.) was founded later, in 1520.

The history of the movement began with the life of Francis of Assisi. Born to a wealthy cloth merchant, Francis chose to abandon his aristocratic life. He gave up his riches to live among the poor and peasants. He even adopted a simple peasant tunic as the religious habit for his followers. Around 1207, Francis began preaching and traveling. In 1209, he traveled to Rome to seek official approval from Pope Innocent III.

As the order grew, it faced significant internal challenges regarding leadership and lifestyle. In 1219, Francis asked Pope Honorius III for help managing the growing group. He eventually resigned from day-to-day leadership and wrote a revised rule in 1221 and 1223. Following his death, leaders like Elias of Cortona rose to prominence. Elias focused on building large structures, such as the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi. However, his leadership style caused conflict with those who wanted to maintain stricter poverty. This led to different branches, such as the Observants, who sought to return to the original spirit of the founder. These historical disagreements resulted in several secessions and the formation of the distinct branches seen today.
The global impact of the Franciscans is reflected in their large membership numbers.
Franciscanism connects to broader themes of social justice and religious dialogue. During the Fifth Crusade, Francis traveled to Egypt to meet with Sultan Malik al-Kamil. This meeting was an early attempt at dialogue between Christianity and Islam. The movement's emphasis on the "minority" or being "lesser" continues to influence how religious people view wealth and status. By choosing to live as the "little brothers," they created a model of service that reaches across different centuries and cultures. Whether through the work of the Poor Clares or the secular members of the Third Order, the core idea remains the same: finding spiritual depth through simplicity.
