Francis James Gillen was an important researcher in Australia. He studied how people live and their cultures. This type of study is called anthropology. He was also an ethnologist. This means he studied different groups of people. His work helped others understand the history of Australia.

Gillen started his career working for the government. He began as a postal messenger in 1867. Later, he worked with telegraphs in Adelaide. In 1875, he moved to the Australian Overland Telegraph Line. He worked at the Charlotte Waters station for many years. He traveled to other places like the Peake station. While working, he wrote down many Aboriginal words and phrases.

In 1892, Gillen became the station master in Alice Springs. He held many important jobs there at once. He was a magistrate and a protector of Aboriginal people. During this time, he met W. Baldwin Spencer. They worked together to study the Arrernte people. In 1896, they saw the Engwura festival. This was a series of ceremonies for Arrernte men. They wrote a famous book in 1899 called The Native Tribes of Central Australia.

Gillen and Spencer had many helpers on their journeys. An Arrernte artist named Erlikilyika helped them. He was their guide and their research assistant. They also wrote a book in 1904. This book was called The Northern Tribes of Central Australia. They even went to the old Peake station. They stayed there for weeks to learn about the Arabanna people. Gillen was also a co-author for a book called The Arunta.

Many people still think about Gillen's work today. One expert called his book very influential. Even animals carry his name now. A small lizard is called the pygmy mulga monitor. It is also known as Varanus gilleni. A tree frog called Ranoidea gilleni is named for him too. These names show how people remember his life. He lived from 1855 until 1912.
