Imagine a song made of many different notes.

Fourier analysis
Fourier analysis

You can break that song into its separate parts. This is called Fourier analysis. It was named after a man named Joseph Fourier. He first used these ideas to study how heat moves.

Fourier analysis works by taking a complex signal and breaking it down. It looks for simple waves called sinusoids. This process is called a Fourier transformation. You can also use these pieces to rebuild the original signal. This is called Fourier synthesis.

This math is used in many ways today. It helps us find the notes in a musical sound. It also helps computers save digital images. For example, JPEG files use a version of this math to stay small.

Scientists use it to study light and even ocean waves. It is a very powerful tool for science and engineering.
