Beyond safety, footwear can be used for fashion and beauty. It can also show a person's rank or status in a group. Some people even use special shoes to show who they are.

Making shoes is a skilled craft. People who make them are called shoemakers, cobblers, or cordwainers.

In the past, many shoes were just leather pieces sewn together. They used a drawstring or a toggle to hold them on. Later, workers made turnshoes by sewing the sole and upper together. Then they turned them inside-out to hide the seams. This helped keep water out of the shoe. Later, a method called welting used a leather band to join parts. This made shoes easier to fix and more comfortable.

Scientists think people needed them at least 50,000 years ago. Fossilized tracks in South Africa might be 130,000 years old. The oldest actual shoes found were in a Nevada desert. These belonged to the Spirit Cave mummy from 10,600 years ago. In 1938, a team found more shoes in an Oregon cave. These were preserved under ash from a volcanic eruption. They were dated to about 10,500 years ago.

Different cultures use shoes in many ways. In East Asia, people have worn wooden Geta sandals for a long time. In ancient Rome, shoes showed power. Rich people wore decorated leather, while slaves were often barefoot.

Some religious groups require people to be barefoot in holy buildings. This can be a sign of respect or humility. In some places, people remove shoes before entering a home. However, being forced to go barefoot has also been used to show unfair power over others.

These items serve several vital purposes for humans. They provide protection against environmental adversities like rough ground or extreme temperatures. They also offer stability on slippery surfaces and ease locomotion. Beyond physical protection, footwear serves social functions. It can be used for fashion and adornment. It can also signal a person's social status or rank. Many people also wear hosiery, such as socks, between their feet and their footwear for extra comfort.

The process of making footwear has evolved through many complex stages. In medieval Europe, early shoes were often simple leather pieces sewn together. These were held tight to the foot using a drawstring or a toggle. This evolved into the turnshoe method. In this technique, the maker sews the sole and the upper together. The maker then turns the shoe inside-out to hide the seam. This process improved water resistance and protected the stitching. Later, a method called welting became common. This involved using a narrow band of leather between the uppers and the sole. Welting increased comfort, improved appearance, and made it easier to replace worn soles.

Footwear comes in many distinct types designed for specific tasks.

Athletes use specialized gear, such as track shoes with spikes. These spikes allow for more stable foot placement during a run. The ultra-lightweight upper helps the runner's step stay light. Other specialized types include climbing shoes, like the Five Ten Anasazi Verde, or bowling shoes.

There are also overshoes like pattens or galoshes. These wooden-soled items were worn over regular shoes to act as a platform against dirt and muck. In Venice, these became highly elevated chopines. Some people even wore toe socks or Tabi to fit specific cultural styles.

The history of footwear stretches back to prehistoric times. Paleoclimatology suggests humans needed footwear at least 50,000 years ago during the Last Glacial Period. Fossilized tracks in South Africa may date back 130,000 years. The oldest recovered shoes were found with the Spirit Cave mummy in Nevada. These date to approximately 10,600 years ago. Another significant discovery occurred in 1938 at Fort Rock Cave in Oregon. A team led by Luther Cressman found shoes preserved under Mazama Ash. These were dated to around 10,500 years ago. These finds show how long humans have used gear to survive different climates.

Throughout history, footwear has been a major symbol of social significance. In ancient Rome, clothing and footwear were unmistakable signs of power. Patricians wore ornamented, dyed leather shoes. Plebeians wore rawhide or hobnail boots. Slaves were often required to be barefoot. This use of footwear to show status continued in many ways. In China, footwear like embroidered slippers was a mark of civilization. In the early modern period, royalty began wearing high heels. This trend started around 1533 with Catherine de Medici. In the Middle Ages, fashion led to extreme styles like the poulaine. These shoes had elongated toes that were sometimes stuffed to keep their shape.

Industrialization changed how footwear was produced and distributed. Around 1760, John Adam Dagyr introduced assembly line production in Lynn, Massachusetts. This is often credited as the start of the first shoe factory. For a long time, most work was still done by hand. However, new inventions changed everything. In 1850, John Nichols adapted sewing machines to handle uppers and soles. In 1880, Jan Ernst Matzeliger invented an automatic lasting machine. This invention allowed productivity to jump from 50 pairs a day to as many as 700 pairs. This massive increase in speed helped halve the price of shoes for everyone.

Today, footwear connects to global trade and professional sports. Major brands like Nike and Adidas use celebrity endorsements to promote athletic shoes.

This has made sneakers a massive part of modern culture. The global trade has also shifted locations over time. After World War II, Italy became a major exporter. By the 1960s, Japan joined this market. Eventually, production moved to places like Taiwan, South Korea, and Hong Kong. From ancient leather wraps to modern high-tech sneakers, footwear remains a vital part of human life and identity.
