This race acts as a track for the shuttle to slide over the lower threads of the shed. At each end of the race, a box catches the shuttle at the end of its journey. These boxes contain a mechanism to propel the shuttle back on its return trip. A weaver can trigger this by yanking a cord attached to a handheld picking-stick.
The shuttle itself is designed with several technical improvements to increase efficiency. It is generally heavier than older shuttles to provide enough momentum to travel through the shed. Many versions feature bullet-shaped, metal-capped ends and small rollers to reduce friction. The weft thread, which is the thread that travels through the warp, is stored on a pirn. A pirn is a long, conical, one-ended bobbin that does not rotate. This design allows the yarn to feed out from the end of the pirn more easily. 
John Kay is the individual typically credited with the invention of the flying shuttle. He received a patent for the device in 1733. While some theories suggest the device may have originated in Languedoc, France, documentation is poor. Kay faced significant challenges in protecting his intellectual property. He and his partners launched many patent infringement lawsuits, but these were costly and often unsuccessful. A syndicate of manufacturers known as "The Shuttle Club" even formed to fight his legal challenges.
The impact of this invention was immediate and profound. The flying shuttle roughly doubled the productivity of weaving. However, it created a significant labor imbalance in the textile industry. Weaving became so fast that the output of spinners could not keep pace. This shortage of thread spurred a wave of spinning innovations, such as the spinning jenny and the water frame. In 1759 or 1760, Robert Kay, John's son, invented the drop box attachment. This allowed looms to use multiple shuttles to weave different colored threads for patterned fabrics.
Despite its benefits, the flying shuttle introduced new risks to the workplace. If the shuttle was deflected from its path, it could be shot clear of the machine. This could result in serious injuries to workers, including the loss of eyes. These safety concerns were significant enough that the British House of Commons discussed installing guards in 1901. Eventually, the flying shuttle became obsolete as newer technologies emerged. Projectile and rapier looms, as well as air-jet and water-jet looms, replaced the heavy, noisy, and energy-inefficient shuttle system.
