Portuguese explorers arrived around 1514. They first named it Ilha dos Patos. In 1526, they changed the name to Ilha de Santa Catarina. A formal settlement began in 1673. The town was originally called Nossa Senhora do Desterro. It became a strategic port between Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires. In 1747, the region became a captaincy with Desterro as its capital. A large group of Azorean settlers arrived between 1747 and 1756.

The city's name changed during a period of political conflict. In the early 1890s, the Federalist Revolt occurred. This movement spread from Rio Grande do Sul to Santa Catarina. The second president of Brazil, Marshal Floriano Peixoto, suppressed the rebellion. He was known as the "Iron Marshal." In 1893, the city was renamed Florianópolis to honor him. The name combines "Floriano" with the Greek term "polis," meaning city. This change marked the end of the Desterro era. It helped define the modern identity of the capital.

Today, the population of the city is 537,211 people.
